Welcome to Kindergarten at East Lake!
Kindergarten - where it all begins! At East Lake Elementary, we strive to nurture the whole child: academically, socially, physically and emotionally.
Units of Study for our Kindergarten learners begins with Building Community - how will we be learners OURSELVES and with each other? This Citizenship area of the Social Studies curriculum continues throughout the year, as we learn what it means to be:
~ A Reader and Writer, through engagement in whole-group Read-Alouds, small group Guided Reading/Writing Clubs, one-to-one reading & writing conferences, and work with the CODE and USE of language - letters & handwriting, phonemic awareness (letters/letter combinations and their sounds), high-frequency word study, and how all of literacy is a message making/message giving process.
~An Author and Illustrator through Units of Study of Margret & H.A Rey (Curious George) and Eric Carle.
~ A Scientist in the Science Units of Study Meteorology & the Seasons (Earth Science), Materials/Non-Living Things (Physical Science), and Life Cycles of Living Things (Life Science)
~A Mathematician, focusing on numerals and number sense; measurement in the form of time, length, weight and capacity; early operations - addition and subtraction; understandings of sorting/data collection & graphing; and geometry using patterning and identification of 2 & 3 dimensional shapes.
~ A Friend, through our look at Ethnography (study of customs of peoples and cultures) focusing on Family stories/traditions; Geography looking at holiday traditions and celebrations in different parts of the world; and Economists studying wants and needs, and goods and services provided in communities.
